Award show season for 2023 is in full force at the moment. This week we are taking a look at some of the winners in recent awards ceremonies as well as who could be up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards this year.

We have already watched the Golden Globe Awards and seen the nominations for the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG) and the Producers Guild Awards as well. Knowing what we know and which movies have already won and which have been nominated, we are able to do some guess work and figure out which movies might be up for Best Picture at the Oscars.

“The Banshees of Inisherin” is a very strong contender for nominations in multiple categories, not just Best Picture. The film centres around lifelong friends who part ways and face drastic consequences for doing so. Written and directed by Martin McDonagh, the film stars Colin Farrell, Kerry Condon and Brendan Gleeson, all of whom received SAG award nominations. McDonagh also received a Directors Guild nomination for his work.

“The Fablemans” is another film which is showing serious promise to be in the running for some Oscar nominations. The movie is directed and written by the legendary Steven Spielberg and stars Michelle Williams who has been nominated for an Oscar four times previously. Paul Dano also stars in the film and he has received a SAG nomination. The movie is a semi-autobiographical story loosely based on Spielberg’s adolescence and starting years as a filmmaker.

In other news this week, turn to our Music pages to read about singer Shakira and her latest song which features lyrics directed at her ex-partner Gerard Pique. The song has been making headlines for Shakira’s less than subtle digs at the father of her two young boys. Do you think she is taking things too far? Let us know.
