In an unusual scene that terrified passers-by in Baghdad, a man strutted in one of the most crowded streets of the Iraqi capital, carrying a Kalashnikov, and firing indiscriminately.
A video of an unknown man shooting randomly at passers-by in the Al-Jamaa neighborhood in the heart of Baghdad has gone viral on social media.
Luckily no one was injured.
The security forces present in the area surrounded him.
After an exchange of fire, the forces arrested him before he could commit an ominous massacre.
It turned out later that the unknown person was taking drugs, and then he fired randomly from a Kalashnikov rifle.
While the video of the incident spread like wildfire in Iraq, amidst terror and panic, people were relieved by the arrest of the addict.
It is noteworthy that the phenomenon of drug trafficking and abuse in Iraq has become a scourge among young people in particular.
There are efforts made by the Iraqi parliament, in cooperation with the executive authority, to limit this phenomenon, through the formation of a supreme body linked to the Council of Ministers, and an amendment to the anti-drug law.
The Security and Defense Committee in the Iraqi parliament is working continuously with the government to create an anti-drug agency directly linked to the prime minister, according to a member of the committee, Hussein Al-Amiri, on Monday.
Drugs are spread, sold and distributed in poor and deprived areas in Baghdad and other governorates, especially the southern ones, there are no official published statistics on the number of drug users in the country.
However, according to security officials, it is spreading among young people of both sexes.
