Three Asians jailed, fined on assault, robbery charges

The Court of Appeal in Dubai upheld a ruling issued by the Court of First Instance sentencing a gang of three Asians to one year to be followed by deportation and fining them Dhs1,700 after being convicted of assaulting a grocer and stealing a sun of money equal to the fine.

The case dated back to June 2020, when a grocer filed a complaint in which he said he had been assaulted by a gang and robbed of a sum of money in his possession.

According to the victim’s statement in the investigations, three Asians took him by surprise and assaulted him before they managed to steal an amount that was in his possession and fled the place.

A policeman stated in the case papers that a team of detectives was able to identify and arrest the convicts. They confessed to having assaulted and robbed the victim in Hor Al Anz area after making sure the place was empty.

They all admitted that they had agreed to form a gang specialised in robbing stores in Hor Al Anz area by assaulting store owners by the time they closed their stores.

Earlier, the Dubai Criminal Court sentenced a gang of three Asians, one of whom is still at large, to three years in jail to be followed by deportation and fined them 12,300 after being convicted of assaulting a businessman with a knife and stealing by coercion a sum of money equal to the fine on a public road with the help of others.

The case dates back to last February when an Asian businessman filed a complaint in which he said he had been assaulted with a knife and robbed of Dhs12,300 by a gang of Asians.

The victim said the convicts and other people assaulted him in different parts of his body before one of them stabbed him twice with a small size knife, while another snatched his wallet.

Recently, the Dubai Criminal Court heard a case in which an African visitor, 43, was accused of importing 1.6 kilogrammes of marijuana inside a sesame bag. The case dated back to last January when a customs inspector at Dubai Airports suspected a plastic bag inside the suitcase of a visitor.
