Woman undergoes rare surgery

Khalidah with her family and doctors.

Forty-nine-year-old Khalidah was admitted to Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah with complaints of Menorrhagia and Dysmenorrhea, which is mainly heavy menstrual flow for months together. Following examination, it was found that her uterus was enlarged as much as it would at 32 weeks of pregnancy. An ultrasound and MRI scan made it clear that she had multiple fibroids, the largest being 10 centimetres and there were many others measuring 5-6 centimetres which occupied the whole of her abdominal cavity.

Fibroids are a very common condition for women and can be dangerous if left untreated. They can continue to grow, both in size and number. As these tumours take over the uterus the periods become heavier and it may be accompanied by severe cramping. Khalidah underwent surgery in Zulekha Hospital, Sharjah where Dr Neeta Warty, Specialist Gynaecologist and Laparoscopic Surgeon assisted by Dr Betty John, Consultant Gynaecologist, conducted a laparoscopic hysterectomy to remove the large uterus which took around 2 hours to complete.

Dr John commented: “We did Khalidah’s basic blood investigations and she was found to be anaemic which was treated prior to the surgery. She had also undergone multiple surgeries earlier including a Caesarean section, an abdominoplasty, a laparotomy for an ovarian cyst and also an umbilical hernia repair with a mesh, which made the space around her uterus negligible and hence it was merging with the abdominal wall, which complicated the procedure. We are happy we could successfully manage this complication as well.” The patient returned home after two days, and is now healthy and recovering well. Khalidah extends her heartfelt thanks to the Zulekha Hospital Gynaecology team saying: “The team of experts at Zulekha Hospital treated me well in time and I am feeling better now.”

Dr Warty added: “These surgeries are laparoscopic which are keyhole surgeries. So a patient goes through very little pain and trauma and can be up and about the very next day, go home the third day and does not have to suffer a lot, as opposed to having an open or conventional surgery. This advanced technique is a breakthrough in healthcare and most helpful when we do these surgeries laparoscopically, especially after the patient has undergone so many conventional surgeries.” Zulekha Healthcare Group is a Superbrand and among the forerunners in UAE healthcare.
