Iraq's Prime Minister Mustafa Al Kadhemi on Sunday suspended Health Minister Hassan Al Tamimi while he is questioned over a fire in a Baghdad COVID-19 hospital that killed 82 people.
"There were 17 patients inside when a fire broke out in the ICU of Vijay Vallabh Hospital, out of which 13 died and four have been shifted to other facilities," fire department official Morrison Khavari said.
Local authorities promised to award the doctors who continued with the operation and the firefighters who extinguished the blaze. Firefighters who took more than two hours to put out the blaze said they used fans to keep smoke out of the operating room.
The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed its sincere condolences to the government of Iraq and to the families of the victims of this tragic accident. In a statement, the UAE foreign ministry also wished a speedy recovery to the injured of the hospital fire.
According to a local Muslim leader, the two families were staying in the gutted house. He also said that one of the families had recently shifted to stay at the residence.
Regarding the possible motive, Mehmood said that he had married a woman named Fouzia Bibi out of free will, alleging that his father-in-law and brother-in-law were unhappy with the marriage and they set his home ablaze "in rage."
