Australian states imposed quarantine and hard border restrictions for travellers from New South Wales (NSW) state after an outbreak in Sydney in late December, throwing Christmas holiday plans of thousands of Australians into chaos.
"In order to restore sense of safety, I will get the coronavirus pandemic, which has raged worldwide and is now severely affecting Japan, under control as soon as possible,” Suga said. "I will stand at the frontline of the battle while I get the people's cooperation."
The main COVID focus in Australia is currently in Sydney in the state of New South Wales (NSW), where an outbreak in Sydney’s west has prompted other states to impose travel restrictions on either all of NSW or people in outbreak suburbs.
India’s overall caseload stood at 12.30 million, making it the third-most affected globally, behind the United States and Brazil.
The south Asian nation recorded 89,129 new infections and 714 deaths, the ministry said. That was the biggest single-day rise since Sept.20 last year and the most deaths since Oct.21, according to a Reuters tally.
India reported 161,736 new coronavirus infections on Tuesday, hitting the world’s highest daily tally once again, for a total of 13.69 million cases, health ministry data showed.
The numbers have also fallen sharply from earlier in September when daily cases averaged around 93,000 in India. More than 1.1 million samples have been tested daily on an average so far in October, according to the Health Ministry.
India’s coronavirus case tally rose by 74,442 in the last 24 hours to 6.63 million on Monday morning, data from the health ministry showed.
Though new cases continued to increase, amid apprehensions of a second wave India has the second-highest number of infections in the world, after the United States, but the rate of increase in India has dipped since it hit a peak in September.
Japan saw a record 4,520 new cases on Dec.31, prompting the capital, Tokyo, and three neighbouring prefectures to seek an emergency declaration from the national government. The region now accounts for about half of new nationwide cases.
