We all want to live longer and stay healthy as we get older, but how much difference do our daily habits really make? This week we are taking a look at some of the simple lifestyle changes that could help us live longer.
Exercise is one of the most important factors in our overall health. Research has found that just 75 minutes of brisk walking a week could increase life expectancy by around two years. It is also important to avoid sitting for long periods, even if you exercise regularly. Getting up and moving around throughout the day can make a difference.
Eating well is just as important, particularly as we get older. Including plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grains and nuts in our diet while cutting back on processed foods can help us stay in better shape as we age. Try to include a portion of vegetables with every meal.
Sleep is another factor worth paying attention to. Research suggests that irregular sleeping patterns may increase the risk of premature death, although the amount of sleep we need varies from person to person. Stress can also affect our health as we age. Spending time with friends and doing activities such as yoga may help us cope better. Of course, genetics also influence how long we live, but there is still plenty we can do to improve our chances.
