Books have always been a big source of material for film and television, and right now adaptations seem to be everywhere. This week we are looking at why Hollywood keeps turning to books for some of its biggest releases.
A successful novel already comes with an audience, and readers are often just as interested in who will play the characters as they are in the story itself. Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson lead “Verity,” Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi take on “Wuthering Heights,” while Florence Pugh stars in a new version of “East of Eden.” There are also more recent favourites making the jump to screen, including “People We Meet on Vacation,” “The Housemaid” and “The Love Hypothesis.”
Of course, adapting a much-loved book can be risky. Readers usually have very clear ideas about how characters should look and which parts of the story should stay untouched. But when the casting feels right, that is often half the excitement.
