Overlooked brilliance

It’s a new year and we are getting closer to Oscar nominations being announced later this month. However, this week we are not focusing on those potential contenders but instead taking a look at fantastic performances from actors who will not be in the running for an Academy Award.

The sci-fi adventure movie “Predator: Badlands” came out recently to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. The film stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi and is the seventh instalment in the “Predator” franchise. Fanning essentially plays two roles in the film, both androids, which allows her to show off her acting skills with the subtle differences between the two characters.

Dwayne Johnson’s starring role in the biographical sport drama film “The Smashing Machine” gave audiences a chance to see what he is capable of doing outside of his usual light-hearted performances. Johnson plays UFC fighter Mark Kerr and while the film didn’t do so well at the box office, his acting skills were praised and the role even earned him a Golden Globe nod.
