There’s a nostalgic theme when it comes to pop music right now and it’s all thanks to Gen Z. This week we are taking a look at how the generation born from the late 1990s through to the early 2010s are proudly bringing back cringey pop.
If you think back to the 2000s you’ll remember artists like Hilary Duff, Lindsay Lohan, and Heidi Montag being very popular. Singers Tate Mcrae and Addison Rae are the modern day equivelant. They have revived music that was deemed shallow and minimalisitc and youngers listeners are loving it. Mcrae’s latest single “Sports Car” has the sound and feel of a tune from the 00s. According to critics, Mcrae and artists like her love to “rework Y2K influences into something fresh.”
What is interesting is that the younger Gen Z fans were not around when the music they are so inspired by came out. Apparently it is the digital archive they have access to that has enabled them to be so heavily influenced by a time they were not even alive in. They also have a much more simplistic way of listening to music without bringing up all the social issues that might come with the singer and the lyrics.
