Florence Pugh

What makes a movie great instead of just good? Is it the actors or the plot? This week we are taking a look at some films that really were not up to par with their plots but featured some fantastic performances by really good actors.

“Black Widow” from the Marvel Cinematic Universe came out in 2021. The reviews from film critics were not good and audiences were not that impressed either. However, there was a standout performance from English actress Florence Pugh. Pugh played a character named Yelena Belova for which she received positive reactions from critics. Interestingly, Pugh was nominated for an Oscar and BAFTA in 2020 for her role in “Little Women.”

Director M N Shyamalan’s movies have always been a little on the strange side with audiences either loving them or hating them. His 2016 film “Split” fell in the latter category and the horror was not a hit. Actor James McAvoy’s performance was another story though. The actor pulled off playing eight different characters in the film as he played someone with multiple personalities.

Kristen Stewart is one of those actresses who either misses or completely aces it with her performances. This time, in “American Ultra” which came out in 2015, she aced it even though the movie was not good. Critics ripped the film apart but Stewart’s performance was praised all over.
