Back in 2016, the sci-fi film “Passengers” was released with what looked to be an impressive cast of actors including Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt. But this movie proved that even with huge star power, things can still go wrong. The plot was picked apart by critics who didn’t like how it started or ended. Audiences were also disappointment with the lack of a “twist.”
“The Lord of the Rings” was a brilliant trilogy of movies which few people found fault with. It was director Peter Jackson’s prequel, “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” which failed to impress. The story was divided into three movies, I don’t think I even watched the whole of the first one. Apparently Jackson wanted Bilbo Baggins’ story to feel as epic as “The Lord of the Rings.” They really should have left this alone and not done a prequel.
Sometimes it’s not the plot or the lack of a plot that’s the problem, it’s an actor. In the case of “Les Misérables,” that actor was Russell Crowe specifically. With an ensemble cast, director Tom Hopper’s 2012 adaptation of the hit stage musical should have been a huge success but audiences and critics did not like Crowe in it. They didn’t like his singing which seemed amateurish compared to his co-stars including Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway.
