Dubai-based Internationally recognised Asian singer and artist Sonia Majeed becomes the first Asian singer to adopt famous film star elephant Lakshmi at Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF), Sri Lanka, celebrating a unique connection between art, compassion and wildlife conservation.
During her visit to Sri Lanka, Sonia visited the MEF, a charitable organisation dedicated to improving the care, protection and welfare of elephants.
Deeply inspired by the foundation’s mission, Sonia decided to officially adopt Lakshmi, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated elephants and the beloved matriarch of the MEF herd.
For Sonia, this adoption represents a powerful connection between two forms of artistry — human creativity and the beauty of nature.
Talking to Gulf Today, she said “As an artist, I believe every living being carries a story. Lakshmi’s journey, strength and legacy inspired me. This is not only an adoption; it is a commitment to respect, protect and celebrate these magnificent creatures.”
It is also mentioned that Lakshmi, whose name represents “Goddess of Prosperity,” is one of the most recognised elephants at Millennium Elephant Foundation.
Known as a symbol of strength and grace, Lakshmi has been associated with international films and documentaries and has become one of the most admired elephants connected with Sri Lanka’s conservation story.
She is also the mother of Pooja, recognised as the first elephant born in captivity in Sri Lanka.
Sonia’s decision reflects her belief that creativity exists beyond humans.
A singer and artist herself, Sonia described her connection with Lakshmi as an “artist respecting another artist” recognising the years of stories, emotions and memories Lakshmi has shared with audiences around the world.
The adoption certificate and adoption package provided through MEF also reflect the foundation’s commitment toward sustainability, featuring environmentally responsible materials created through innovative recycling methods, including elephant dung paper products that transform natural waste into useful eco-friendly products.
This sustainable approach highlights how conservation, responsible tourism and environmental awareness can work together to create a positive impact.
The MEF works towards improving the care, protection and treatment of elephants in Sri Lanka, providing support for elephants that require long-term care while promoting awareness about responsible elephant welfare.
MEF’s mission focuses on ensuring better protection, health and dignity for elephants while encouraging global support for conservation efforts. Through her adoption of Lakshmi, Sonia joins a growing movement of international voices using their influence to support sustainability and animal welfare.
