The child Adnan Mohammed Al Qadi was worn out by illness, which gnawed the heart of an entire family watching their child withering before their eyes day after day.
Adnan suffers from Duchenne muscular dystrophy, while his family is helpless in the face of the exorbitant treatment cost of Dhs10,600,000 (Dhs10.6 million), which is the value of one of the most expensive gene injections in the world.
Adnan’s mother entered his room, hiding her tears behind a tired smile, and told him, "Happy new year, my dear."
Adnan gave a small smile and asked her, "Will I be able to play with my friends next Eid?" Words froze in her throat, and she found no answer but to deeply embrace him.
Adnan looked at his new clothes hanging on the wall, which his father had bought for him weeks ago, hoping he would wear them on Eid day.
Adnan turned his face towards the window and saw children laughing and playing in the street, while he was unable to join them.
The hours of Eid passed slowly and heavily. Adnan heard only sounds of joy from afar, as if they belonged to another world he could not reach.
Despite all he was suffering, he did not ask for a toy, did not wish for a gift, and did not envy anyone for their joy.
His dream was to wake up one day without pain, to run and laugh and live his innocent childhood, a large part of which illness had stolen.
As evening fell, Adnan used to gaze at the sky from his small window, while his mother silently prayed to Allah Al Mighty, hoping her son be granted a recovery which would restore to him what he had lost of his childhood days.
