Emirati regains ability to speak and eat after surgery reconstructs jaw damaged in a traffic accident

A 40-year old Emirati Juma Al Sayed had a comprehensive oral and maxillofacial reconstruction and rehabilitation at "Medcare Dentofacial" in Dubai after suffering significant difficulties in eating, speaking, and even recognising his facial features in the mirror following a tragic traffic accident.

After the surgery, Juma was reportedly able to regain his ability to eat and speak.

Juma sustained severe facial injuries in June 2024, following a serious traffic accident which caused fractures around his eyes, upper jaw, and palate. He received emergency treatment, but the long-term effects of the injury continued to impact various aspects of his daily life. He allegedly faced difficulty chewing food and swallowing, experienced significant weight loss, and his facial features changed due to severe bone loss in both the upper and lower jaws.

Juma said, "After the accident, everything in my life changed. Eating became difficult, speaking was different, and even looking at myself in the mirror was psychologically painful."

In July 2025, he headed to "Medcare Dentofacial" seeking a solution to restore his normal oral functions and previous appearance.

At Medcare Dentofacial, a multidisciplinary team developed an advanced and customised treatment plan for his condition, led by Dr Farzin Sarkarat, Consultant Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, and Dr Saman Fallahi, Specialist in Dentistry and Prosthodontics. The team used the latest techniques in reconstructive surgery, digital planning, and dental implants to rebuild the patient's jaw.

Dr Sarkarat said, "This was one of the most complex cases we dealt with, as the patient lost his teeth and the essential bone structure needed for normal oral functions. It was necessary to rebuild this foundation and restore his ability to eat, speak, and live his daily life normally again."

He added, "The treatment plan followed an integrated digital approach, where the final shape of the teeth was designed and their positions precisely determined before any surgical procedure began. Customised surgical guides were also developed using 3D printing technology to ensure the highest levels of accuracy in dental implant placement and jaw reconstruction. Bone grafting was performed under comprehensive anesthesia using bone taken from inside the patient's own mouth to reconstruct the damaged areas of the jaw, along with a sinus lift procedure to enhance bone density and volume in the upper jaw, thereby creating a suitable environment for the success of the comprehensive rehabilitation process."

According to Dr Sarkarat, 14 dental implants were placed, eight in the upper jaw and six in the lower. He said: “After the surgical phase was completed, the patient was provided with temporary implant-supported teeth during the recovery period, before transitioning several months later to permanent ceramic restorations designed to provide long-term stability and a natural appearance.”

Dr Saman Fallahi said, "The final prosthetic restorations were designed to provide the highest degree of stability, functional efficiency, and natural appearance, in addition to restoring facial balance after the injury."

After completing the treatment, Juma reported a significant improvement in his ability to eat, speak, and resume his daily activities normally.
