Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum has announced a symbolic yet significant initiative in Dubai, directing the Community Development Authority to replace the title “Housewife” with “Generation Shaper.” The announcement was made on Saturday to coincide with the celebration of Mother’s Day.
The move aims to recognise the profound and often underappreciated role mothers play in shaping families, communities, and the broader fabric of society. By introducing the term “Generation Shaper,” the initiative reframes motherhood as an active, nation-building contribution rather than a passive domestic role.
In a message shared on the social platform X, Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the foundational influence of mothers, describing them as “the first school” where children learn essential values such as belonging, responsibility, and identity. He emphasised that these early lessons are instrumental in building strong, cohesive societies.
The directive to adopt the new title reflects a broader vision within the United Arab Emirates to elevate social roles that contribute to long-term national development. It also aligns with ongoing efforts to promote family cohesion, social stability, and recognition of unpaid contributions within households.
While largely symbolic, the terminology shift carries cultural and social weight. It acknowledges that mothers who dedicate their time to raising children are actively shaping future generations—impacting education, values, and community resilience in ways that extend far beyond the home.
Sheikh Hamdan concluded his message with a tribute to mothers, expressing gratitude and appreciation: “You are the foundation of everything good.” The initiative has been widely viewed as a gesture of respect and recognition, reinforcing the importance of motherhood in both private life and public discourse.
The change is expected to be reflected in official communications and social programmes under the Community Development Authority, setting a precedent for how caregiving roles are defined and valued in the UAE.
