The Sharjah Department of Agriculture and Livestock has inaugurated the fourth phase of its initiative to distribute non-genetically modified organic wheat seeds to farmers. Running for one week, this phase comes as part of the generous initiative of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
The launch took place at the administrative building of the Wheat Farm in Meliha, with members of the Wheat Farmers Association and several local farmers in attendance.
The initiative seeks to empower farmers to expand organic wheat cultivation, provide them with the necessary tools and equipment to enhance productivity, and play an active role in boosting local production. It also aims to encourage community participation to ensure the availability, production, and sustainability of essential food crops, particularly wheat.
Sharjah has placed the cultivation of organic wheat at the forefront of its agricultural priorities, recognizing it as a vital strategic resource and a cornerstone of the emirate’s proactive and exceptional approach to food security. Through this initiative, Sharjah aims to expand the scope of organic wheat farming to enhance productivity and increase overall agricultural output.
Dr Eng. Khalifa Musabeh Al Teneiji, Chairman of the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, emphasised that the ongoing distribution of organic wheat seeds to farmers part of the generous initiative of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah supports the expansion of wheat cultivation and boosts local production. He noted that this initiative aligns with the government’s strategy to empower farmers to supply vital agricultural products and to strengthen self-sufficiency by reducing reliance on imports.
Khalifa Al Teneiji said: “This season, 20 tons of non-genetically modified organic wheat seeds will be distributed to approximately 500 farmers. The initiative extends beyond simple seed distribution, as it also provides support from specialized agricultural engineers who offer continuous guidance and oversee the cultivation process throughout the season. The aim is to promote the sustainability of the agricultural sector, strengthen its overall contribution, and equip farmers with modern farming techniques and advanced technologies that enhance productivity while aligning with the UAE’s climatic conditions.”
He added: “The Department is also working on establishing a smart agricultural platform that monitors registered farms via satellite, providing technical data that enhances productivity and raises agricultural awareness to help preserve natural resources. The platform will also facilitate communication and advisory services, encourage investment in the agricultural sector, and connect farmers with retail outlets to help market their products.”
Mohammed Obaid Al Teneiji, Director of the Central Region Branch at the Department of Agriculture and Livestock, stated: “This generous initiative extends beyond the distribution of seeds. Through it, the Department provides comprehensive support that includes plowing and preparing agricultural lands, as well as planting them after the organic seeds are delivered to registered farmers. The Department also offers ongoing agricultural guidance through regular field visits focused on irrigation, fertilization, pest control, and monitoring crop growth stages to achieve the highest possible yields. Additionally, a wheat harvesting service is provided at the end of the season using specialized equipment. The Department is deeply committed to encouraging farmers to adopt globally recognized best agricultural practices to safeguard the environment and its resources, while ensuring the production of healthy, safe, and sustainable food.”
