Sharjah utilises satellite technology to detect water leaks in distribution networks

Sharjah Electricity, Water, and Gas Authority (SEWA) successfully detected and repaired 1,345 leaks in water transmission and distribution networks, saving 1,331 million gallons of water, equivalent to Dhs46 million. This achievement was made possible through the implementation of a satellite-based water leak detection project.

Engineer Faisal Al Sarkal, Director of the Water Department at SEWA, explained that satellite technology was utilised to survey the 5,000 km-long water network. Additionally, a field team inspected 950 km of the network using acoustic detection devices to identify invisible leaks. Thanks to these advanced technologies and the team’s swift response, a significant number of leaks were detected and addressed between March 2024 and May 2025.

Abdullah Ismail Haji, an Environmental Inspector in the Water Department, added that SEWA continuously monitors and maintains water networks in accordance with global best practices. The authority, he added, aims to further reduce water loss and minimise waste in existing networks, reflecting its commitment to conserving water resources.
