UAE President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has made a significant contribution to the establishment of the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia. This achievement is indicative of a successful diplomatic strategy, predicated on the consolidation of collaborative relationships and the promotion of dialogue, with a view to enhancing security and peace in the Caucasus region and on a global scale.
UAE venue of meeting and dialogue
In the past July, the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, and the Prime Minister of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, chose the UAE as the venue for their meeting and dialogue. This decision was made on the basis of the UAE's international credibility as a reliable supporter of peace, diplomatic solutions, multilateral cooperation, and efforts to enhance regional stability.
During this historic meeting, the UAE confirmed its commitment to supporting all efforts to consolidate security and stability in the Caucasus region, and to achieving development and prosperity for the peoples of Azerbaijan and Armenia. The UAE has praised this step, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement that embodies the triumph of dialogue and upholds the principles of good neighbourliness and peaceful coexistence.
Cementing stability in the Caucasus
During the Abu Dhabi meeting, Aliyev and Pashinyan discussed bilateral relations between their respective countries and ways to build trust and stability in the South Caucasus region.
The discussions also covered border demarcation, the Zangezur corridor, prisoner and missing person exchanges, international non-aggression and respect for national sovereignty guarantees, and gradual mechanisms for restoring trade and cultural relations between the two peoples.
Dr Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Adviser to President of the UAE, stated via the X platform that the UAE's contribution to the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington was the result of the astute efforts led by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
He said, "The UAE's' role in facilitating the historic peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia in Washington is a testament to the strategic efforts of the President His Highness Sheikh Mohamed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. He played a pivotal role in orchestrating the Abu Dhabi meeting between President Aliyev and Prime Minister Pashinyan, paving the way for this momentous accord."
He added, “The UAE will always play a part in promoting goodwill, peace and stability in the region.”
The UAE has strong ties with both Azerbaijan and Armenia. It believes that a new chapter of constructive cooperation between the two countries is important for achieving development and prosperity for their peoples, and for advancing regional development.
