In the context of a comprehensive national strategy aimed at safeguarding society against the perils associated with drug smuggling, Dubai Customs is undertaking intensive efforts across its various ports and customs centres to combat the illicit trade.
It plays a pivotal role in combating smuggling attempts by developing inspection methods, enhancing international collaboration, and intensifying training and qualifications for inspectors.
In recognition of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, which is commemorated on June 26 annually, Yasser Al Musalmi, Senior Customs Advisor and Supervisor of the Customs Inspection Sector at Dubai Customs, has asserted that the Emirate of Dubai has emerged as a global exemplar in the endeavour to combat contraband smuggling, with the establishment of a 100 per cent national team.
The Dubai Customs authorities, this year, announced foiling of an attempt to smuggle 1.2 tons of psychotropic substances.
The shipment was detected by specialised teams as it passed through the emirate's airport. This was achieved through the use of precise data analysis, a detailed inspection of the shipment, and the latest security technologies.
This operation serves as a testament to the proficiency of Dubai Customs inspectors in discerning subtle nuances and adeptly managing suspicious cases with a high degree of professionalism, thereby enhancing border security, thwarting attempts to smuggle prohibited substances, and preventing their access to the community.
In addition, the Dubai Customs thwarted an attempt to smuggle 147.4 kilograms of narcotics and psychotropic substances through one of the emirate's seaports this year.
It was the vigilant actions of the Dubai Customs inspectors that led to the successful detection of the illicit transit shipment, after they had aroused suspicion regarding its contents. Consequently, customs teams have intensified monitoring and inspection operations, utilising the latest security technologies and advanced means.
