Khaled Shawqi, the courageous truck driver who saved an entire neighborhood in 10th of Ramadan City from a potentially catastrophic explosion, has died from the severe burns he sustained during his heroic act.

Shawqi had been receiving treatment in intensive care at Ahl Masr Hospital after suffering third-degree burns. Despite efforts by medical staff, he passed away on Sunday, just days after risking his life to prevent a large-scale disaster.

The incident occurred when Shawqi’s fuel truck suddenly caught fire while parked at a gas station amid soaring temperatures. Without hesitation, he leapt into the burning vehicle and drove it away from the fuel pumps and nearby residential areas, minimizing the risk of a deadly explosion.

Bystanders captured the dramatic moment on video as Shawqi, engulfed in flames, asked for help to extinguish the fire consuming his body. Despite his critical injuries, he attempted to direct others at the scene on how to contain the blaze, showing remarkable composure and courage before collapsing in pain.

The selfless act moved thousands across Egypt and the Arab world, with tributes pouring in on social media praising Shawqi's bravery. Many described him as a national hero who placed the lives of others above his own.

Shawqi, a native of Bani Obaid in the Dakahlia Governorate, worked in the transportation of petroleum products. He leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary sacrifice and widespread public admiration.

In recognition of his actions, local authorities in 10th of Ramadan City have announced plans to name a street in his honor—a lasting tribute to a man whose bravery saved countless lives.
