Man jailed, fined for stealing cash and using ATM card for shopping from a wallet he found in a street

The Dubai Misdemeanor Court sentenced an Asian to one month in jail and fined him Dhs2,000 for stealing Dhs1,200 and an ATM card from a wallet that he found and using the ATM card to buy some stuffs before he threw them away.

The Dubai Misdemeanor Court has also ordered his deportation after serving jail term however, the Court of Appeal upheld the jail term and fine but revoked the deportation.

The case dates back to last August when an Asian reported to the police that he had lost his wallet and ATM cards near a store in Al Quoz Industrial Area.

He stated that while he was buying from a store near his place of residence, he found that his wallet was missing.

He searched for his wallet, which contained Dhs1,200, his Emirates ID card, his original ID card, a driving licence and an ATM card, in his place of residence and workplace but did not find it, he said.

In the meantime, he received several messages that his ATM card was used to buy stuffs from a store for selling foodstuffs, he added.

He reported what happened to the police accordingly, he said.

A policeman stated in the interrogations that a team of detectives identified the ATM card user and arrested him.

On interrogation, the defendant admitted that he had found a wallet and cards from which he stole Dhs1,200 and bought some stuffs with a card that was inside it before he threw them away.
