A criminal court in Jordan has sentenced a person to one week in jail with paying the judicial fees on the charge of animal abuse.

The judgment was based on that the defendant was found guilty of beating the donkey in the face, which led to the injury to its nose.

In addition, he cut hair of the donkey’s neck.

The defendant confessed to the charges, justifying his act by that the donkey had eaten two sacks of barley belonged to him.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) organisation applauded the Jordanian Court's decision regarding the ruling against animal torture.

“We are very happy with this decision and with clear and serious addressing of torture, and we hope it spreads throughout the kingdom," said Jason Baker, PETA senior vice president.

Baker added, "Previously, we have witnessed for a long time many cases of torture, which did not receive justice or awareness programmes to stop them, as the organization's free clinic received many cases of torture on a daily basis."
