Worldwide COVID-19 caseload crosses 254.5 million

More than 254,589,978 people have been reported infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 5,122,004 people have died, according to a reputable website https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ tally on Tuesday.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in December 2019.

In the last 24 hours, India registered 8,865 new COVID-19 cases, marking the lowest single-day infection spike in the last 287 days, the Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.

The nationwide death toll currently stood at 463,852 after 197 more people succumbed to the virus, according to the Ministry.

The recovery of 11,971 patients in the last 24 hours has increased the cumulative tally to 33,861,756. Consequently, India's recovery rate stands at 98.27 per cent, the highest since March 2020.

The active caseload stands at 130,793, the lowest in 525 days. Active cases presently account for 0.38 per cent of the country's total positive cases, the lowest since March 2020.

Mexico's health ministry reported 775 new confirmed coronavirus cases and 57 more fatalities on Monday, bringing the country's overall death toll from the pandemic to 291,204 and the total number of cases to 3,846,508.

Officials have said the ministry's figures likely represent a significant undercount of both COVID-19 cases and deaths.

With Europe now the epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic, countries across the continent are introducing new measures to curb the resurgence, including several curbs for unvaccinated people.

Starting from Monday, the German capital of Berlin has banned unvaccinated people from entering restaurants, bars, cinemas and other entertainment venues, Xinhua news agency.

Moreover, outdoor events with more than 2,000 people will also be off-limits to unvaccinated adults.

German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said on Monday that Chancellor Angela Merkel is urging the federal and state governments to pull together in the face of the worsening pandemic situation in Germany.

The number of new cases around the world has been slowly increasing over the past few weeks.

Meanwhile, in Austria, as of Monday unvaccinated people were only allowed to leave their apartments for essential reasons such as purchasing groceries, visiting a doctor or pharmacy, or going to work.

The UK will extend the use of a third booster dose of a COVID-19 vaccine to residents between the ages of 40 and 49, with the aim of strengthening their immunity ahead of the cold winter months.

Currently, the third dose in the UK is available for citizens over the age of 50, those with health problems, and health workers who are in daily contact with the virus.
