Worldwide coronavirus cases cross 125 million

More than 125.1 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and around 2,875,357 million have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Infections have been reported in more than 210 countries and territories since the first cases were identified in China in December 2019.

European Union leaders met to navigate a common path out of the pandemic as infections surge in many of their countries, while President Joe Biden set a new goal of administering 200 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine in the United States in his first 100 days in office.

Key trade negotiators, decision makers and private sector representatives from Arab and Middle Eastern countries discussed contemporary trade policy issues in the region, including the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, in a roundtable discussion held online. The debate was organised as part of the WTO’s online Regional Trade Policy Course for WTO members and observers in the Arab and Middle Eastern region.

With over 59,000 coronavirus cases, India on Friday recorded the highest single-day rise so far this year, pushing the nationwide COVID-19 tally to 11,846,652 according to the Union Health Ministry data updated today.

The 59,118 new infections reported in a span of 24 hours were the highest since October 18, 2020, the data by the health ministry showed. The death toll increased to 160,949 with 257 daily new fatalities.

Australia is considering diverting COVID-19 inoculations from its vaccination programme to Papua New Guinea where the coronavirus is threatening to unleash a humanitarian disaster, a government source said.

China's capital Beijing has started offering domestically developed vaccines to foreigners, the city's foreign affairs office said.
