A 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck, around 1:11pm local time, northeastern Taiwan on Sunday, with residents reporting strong shaking in the capital Taipei.

The central weather bureau traced the epicentre of the quake to northeastern Yilan county, and said it hit at a depth of 67 kilometres.

According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a moderately shallow depth of 66km.

The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
