A 57-year-old African worker’s attempt to smuggle 1,600 grammes of Marijuana into the UAE was foiled by an alert customs officer at Dubai International Airport.

The drug was hidden in a herbal and foodstuffs bag.

Details of the case date back to April this year when a customs inspector at the Dubai Airport suspected the defendant’s bag upon his arrival at the airport.

African worker’s bag was searched and a  plastic bag containing herbs and foodstuffs was found.

The foodstuff bag was sent to a lab for further examination that affirmed that the material inside was Marijuana.

The suspect was referred to the drug control department where he confessed that he received the bag from a person in his country to deliver to another man in the UAE.

The suspect was sent to jail awaiting trial.
