Abu Dhabi merges areas, renames it after Sheikh Zayed’s first horse Rabdan

Abu Dhabi’s al Maqta and Bawabat areas have been merged into one area named Rabdan by the Municipality of Abu Dhabi.

Rabdan is the name of the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s the first horse.

The areas were renamed under the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the follow-up of Hazza bin Zayed, Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the United Arab Emirates Armed Forces. It aims to embody the importance of local heritage in the designations of cities and regions in the emirate.

One of the horses of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, is also named Rabdan. This horse is descended from the thoroughbred Arabian horses owned by the Al Nahyan dynasty for hundreds of years.

Rabdan means strength, courage, and fearlessness, and reflects the UAE’s interests in thoroughbreds.
