Taiwan braced for typhoon Bailu on Saturday, shutting businesses and schools as airlines cancelled hundreds of flights amid warnings of landslides, floods and high seas on the island.
Typhoon Bailu, categorised at the weakest typhoon level by Taiwan's weather bureau, made landfall in Saturday afternoon in the southern county of Pingtung with maximum winds of 137 km (85 miles) per hour.
Hundreds of people were moved to safety, while more than 350 flights were cancelled. Some 34,000 soldiers were deployed in the south amid fears of floods.
The storm, which was the first to make landfall on the island in more than two years, cut power to nearly 30,000 homes and caused localized flooding in southern Taiwan.
The bureau issued wind and rain warnings for southern Taiwan, including the port city of Kaohsiung where businesses and schools were closed. It also put out a warning to seafarers around the island.
The typhoon is expected to cross the Taiwan Strait and hit the Chinese province of Fujian over the weekend, forecasters said.
Typhoons regularly hit Taiwan, China, the Philippines and Japan in the second half of the year, gathering strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or South China Sea.
Typhoon Morakot devastated the island in 2009, killing nearly 700 people, most of them in landslides.

A powerful typhoon will hit Taiwan later on Thursday, bringing the risk of landslides and high seas, weather forecasters said, hours after a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck the island.
On Friday, Philippine authorities issued storm warnings for Cagayan and Ilocos Norte provinces on its northern island of Luzon and for sparsely inhabited islands of Luzon's northern coast. There were no immediate reports of flooding or damage.
The authority stated, according to the decision on the control of entry and residence of foreigners, that in order to obtain an entry visa to visit a friend or relative, the foreigner coming to the country must be a friend or relative of a citizen, regardless of the degree of kinship, and that the foreigner coming to the country must be a first-degree or first-degree relative of a resident residing in the country.
An official associated with the case said, “Trump will be fingerprinted, a mug shot will be taken, investigators will complete arrest paperwork and do a check to see if he has any outstanding criminal charges or warrants. That all happens away from the public.”
Al Neyadi said on Twitter: “Water is a precious resource in space. It is used to create clean air by separating oxygen from hydrogen, and it is also recycled to provide a continuous supply of clean water."
A video clip that was widely circulated showed the former player of Al-Fayhaa Club, Al-Hilal and Al-Taawon, Malik Abdul Monaim, rushing to a car lined up in one of the neighborhoods of the city of Zulfi, to rescue a child inside a car as he was playing with fire.
