The kith and kin and friends of the couple were travelling on the flight which appeared to be full. Most of the passengers were seen without masks, in a breach of coronavirus regulations.

The groom tied the mangalsutra, a set of black beads held together by a yellow thread or a gold chain along with a golden pendant, around the bride's neck and got photographed with his new bride.

"A SpiceJet chartered flight was booked yesterday from Madurai. Airport Authority officials were unaware of the mid-air marriage ceremony," informed Madurai Airport Director S. Senthil Valavan.

The aviation regulator DGCA has started investigations into the event and derostered the entire SpiceJet crew.

The state of Tamil Nadu is under lockdown till May 31 as part of the coronavirus restrictions.
