Goodbye to the Duke of Edinburgh

The “rock” of the British monarchy has passed away. That is how Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was described. On April the 9th, Queen Elizabeth II lost her partner of 73 years. A loyal husband and a doting father, Prince Philip passed away at the age of 99 after spending some time in hospital.

Prince Philip married Elizabeth, who still was not queen at the time, in 1947 in a ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The wedding was broadcast on the radio to over 200 million people around the world. In 1952, Elizabeth became the Queen and Philip became her consort.

Prince Philip was very loyal to his duties and his wife. He stood behind her before the entire world for all his life. At a time when men were seen as the main breadwinners, Prince Philip handled his new role with grace and dignity.

Prince Philip often made headlines for the funny comments that he would make during public events. He was known for his bluntness and direct way of speaking which sometimes raised a few eyebrows. However, most people found his way of speaking refreshing as the monarchy is known for always being very careful with what they say.

While the nation of Britain has lost their Duke of Edinburgh, a family has lost their father, husband, grandfather and great-grandfather. Two months short of his 100th birthday, Prince Philip has no doubt left an unfillable hole in the lives and hearts of many.
