Spain celebrated a memorable FIFA World Cup triumph on Sunday, but one of the night's most touching moments came after the final whistle when teenage star Lamine Yamal walked across the pitch to embrace a tearful Lionel Messi.
The 19-year-old, who played a key role in Spain's 1-0 extra-time victory over Argentina, left the celebrations briefly to comfort the footballer he has long described as his greatest inspiration. The heartfelt exchange between the two Barcelona icons from different generations quickly became one of the most talked-about moments of the final.
What the pair discussed remains private, but Yamal later made his admiration for Messi unmistakably clear.
"Messi is the best in history," the Spanish forward said after lifting the World Cup, adding that sharing the occasion with his childhood hero felt "surreal."
The moment carried added significance because of a remarkable connection dating back almost two decades.
In 2007, during a Barcelona charity calendar shoot organised with UNICEF, a young Messi was photographed holding an infant. Years later, it emerged that the baby in the picture was Yamal, then only a few months old.
That image has since become one of football's most famous photographs. On Sunday, history seemed to come full circle as the child once cradled by Messi offered comfort to the Argentine great after one of the most painful defeats of his career.
Messi himself had praised Yamal before the final, calling him an exceptional talent capable of achieving something special. The Spanish youngster delivered on that promise with another influential performance on the biggest stage.
Spain secured the title through Ferran Torres, whose extra-time winner in the 106th minute settled a tense contest. The decisive move began with Yamal, who released Pedro Porro down the right. Porro's low delivery into the penalty area found Torres, who calmly finished beyond Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez.
Argentina's challenge became even tougher after Enzo Fernández was shown a red card early in extra time, forcing the South Americans to play the closing stages with 10 men.
While Torres' goal sealed Spain's second World Cup crown, it was Yamal's gesture after the match that struck an emotional chord with football fans around the world.
