Bottom side Wolverhampton Wanderers snapped Newcastle United’s three-match Premier League winning streak in a 0-0 stalemate on Sunday, as the embattled hosts went unbeaten in five straight matches, including four league games, for the first time this season.
Newcastle kept the ball to pressure the hosts with crosses, and it almost paid off in the 16th minute when Harvey Barnes’s curling ball found Nick Woltemade in front of goal but the German headed wide from close range.
Wolves fought back with through balls past the visitors’ backline but neither team had a shot on target for almost half an hour until Mateus Mane, with his back to the target, flicked right at the Newcastle keeper.
Hugo Bueno narrowly missed the Newcastle goal just before the break and Yerson Mosquera’s jumping header early in the second half went over, while Wolves keeper Jose Sa caught Joelinton’s close-range header in the 85th minute as both sides shared the spoils.
Eighth-placed Newcastle host Aston Villa next Sunday, a day after Wolves, 14 points below safety, visit Manchester City.
Earlier, Mikel Arteta claimed Arsenal were denied a “clear penalty” in a 0-0 draw at Nottingham Forest on Saturday as the Gunners edged seven points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Forest survived a VAR review in the closing stages when the ball seemed to brush the arm of defender Ola Aina.
Arsenal remain well on course to end a 22-year wait to win the title, but have failed to take full advantage of Manchester City’s poor form in 2026 by dropping four points in their last two league games.
“Obviously disappointed because we want the points,” said Arteta.
“We haven’t conceded a single shot, we created four big chances, and on top of that, there is a clear penalty that has not been given.
“It is true he (Aina) plays it with his shoulder, but then he brings the arm in to keep the ball inside the pitch, so it is a clear penalty.”
A struggle to create openings and take their chances when they come has been a consistent problem for Arteta’s men this season, despite their dominant position in the table.
“We could’ve been better, but as well, this is happening all around the league for every single team,” added the Spaniard.
“We have to improve and be better, especially when we create four big chances, you have to put them away.”
Forest boss Sean Dyche had a very different view on the Aina incident.
“You may as well cancel football if you’re going to give that,” said Dyche, whose side edged five points clear of the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, Florian Wirtz said Liverpool’s 1-1 draw with lowly Burnley on Saturday “feels like a defeat” after the Premier League champions dropped points for the fourth straight game.
Arne Slot’s men are unbeaten in their past 12 games in all competitions but are struggling to kill teams off.
Germany international Wirtz put the home side ahead at Anfield on Saturday after Dominik Szoboszlai missed a penalty but Marcus Edwards levelled with the visitors’ only shot on target in the 65th minute.
Liverpool had a total of 32 shots, including 11 on target, but could not make their dominance count.
Wirtz, who has hit form after a slow start to his Anfield career, said the result was frustrating.
“It feels like a defeat,” he said. “When we had so many shots and so many on target, I think we had to score more goals.
“But some days are like this -- you try everything but in the end it doesn’t go in the goal. We only take one point but I can only say (in) the next game we go again and try to do better.”
Liverpool boss Slot bemoaned his side’s bluntness in attack and tendency to concede goals despite giving away few chances.
“We should have won this game,” he told the BBC. “There was not a lot I could ask more in terms of chance creation.”
The draw leaves Liverpool fourth in the Premier League table, seven points behind third-placed Aston Villa and one ahead of Manchester United, in fifth spot.
