Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the Sharjah Family and Community Council, received on Wednesday evening, at Al Badee’ Palace, the players of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club volleyball team following their historic victory at the inaugural West Asia Women’s Volleyball Clubs Championship.
The reception was attended by Sheikha Haya Bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa, Chairperson of the Supervisory and Follow-up Committee of the Arab Women Sports Tournament.
The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club team was crowned champion of the first edition of the The West Asian Volleyball Association (WAVA) Clubs Volleyball Championship, hosted by the State of Kuwait.
This reception marked the culmination of an exceptional journey by the team, which marked history of Emirati women’s sport in Sharjah and the United Arab Emirates. The team secured the gold medal after a convincing straight-sets victory (3–0) over Kuwait’s Al-Fatat Club in the final match, held last Saturday at Salwa Al-Sabah Sports Club in Kuwait, in the presence of prominent officials and a large audience.
Sheikha Jawaher delivered a speech expressing her deep pride in the achievement, congratulating the players and affirming that their success embodies the values of commitment, teamwork, and sustained dedication upon which the Sharjah Women’s Sports Foundation was established.
'Sport is not just about results and trophies'
She emphasised the Foundation’s belief that investing in people is the most genuine path to creating successful champions. Her Highness said: “Today, we stand proudly before the result of years of hard work and patience. Our daughters, with whom we began this dream at a young age, have raised the name of Sharjah high by winning the cup and gold medals at the WAVA Clubs Volleyball Championship in Kuwait. This achievement is the beginning of an ambitious journey toward regional and international podiums, grounded in firm values and sportsmanship that reflect the true spirit and honourable identity of Sharjah.”
Sheikha Jawaher strikes an endearing note with one of the players.
Her Highness added: “We believe that sport is not merely about results and trophies, it is a journey built on patience, measured by commitment, and strengthened by values. Our work in women’s sport aims to build accomplished individuals with honourable achievements, not merely competitors. Above all, we seek to instil cooperation, discipline, and respect in every athlete. We recognise that regional and Arab competition is strong and that some countries have preceded us by many years in training and experience, but we have chosen steady progress over rushed leaps, learning from every experience without compromising our identity or values.
"Our goal is for our teams to represent Sharjah through their ethics before their achievements, to enter every competition with a unified team spirit and a firm determination for continuous development. Through the support of Sharjah Women’s Sports, the efforts of the staff and daily attention to the smallest details, we are shaping a clear path for future generations. The ones that believe challenge is an honour, true excellence lies in continuity, and that a dream nurtured with sincerity will inevitably reach the highest summit.”
Sheikha Hayat Bint Abdulaziz Al Khalifa also congratulated the team and expressed her happiness with the achievement, stating: “This title represents a pivotal milestone in the journey of the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, not only because it is the first championship title of its kind, but for what it signifies in terms of the advanced position now held by women’s sport in the UAE and the Gulf region. It reaffirms that Emirati women are capable of competing, excelling, and raising the national flag high across various arenas.”
Winning this title was not the result of a single match, but the culmination of an ideal campaign in which the team remained unbeaten throughout the championship. The team opened its campaign with a victory over Qatar’s Al Arabi Club, followed by a win against Yemen’s Al Nasr Club, before securing an important group-stage victory over Kuwait’s Salwa Al-Sabah Club.
In the knockout stages, the team continued to assert its championship character, defeating Saudi Arabia’s Al Fayhaa Club in the quarterfinals and Al Ula Club in the semifinals in a match described as one of the strongest and most competitive encounters of the tournament. The team advanced to the final with unwavering determination and high focus, despite the significant physical and mental demands.
