Jebel Ali Racecourse boosts its global presence with The Curragh

The Jebel Ali Racecourse continues to solidify its status as a global powerhouse in horse racing, fuelled by a dynamic and enduring partnership with Ireland’s prestigious The Curragh Racecourse.

This alliance brilliantly reflects the visionary leadership of Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, whose unwavering commitment to forging strong bonds with the world’s elite racecourses is propelling Jebel Ali to new heights on the international stage.

Part of a strategic association, Kildare Derby Festival at The Curragh hosted Jebel Ali Racecourse sponsored Anglesey Stakes.

Colin Keane orchestrated a masterful symphony from the saddle aboard Suzie Songs, guiding the talented filly to a heart-stirring victory over the red-hot favourite Flushing Meadows in a breath-taking climax to win the race.

The race, sponsored by Jebel Ali Racecourse, stands out as a platform for discovering promising talents among young horses and contributing to the making of future champions, in addition to its role in supporting the production and development of authentic thoroughbred breeding stock.

The Anglesey Stakes is a Group 3 race, but it has indeed been a stepping stone for horses that went on to achieve Group 1 success, both domestically in Ireland and internationally.

Over the decades, the Anglesey Stakes has served as an early proving ground for future champions. Caerleon began his path here in 1982, going on to capture France’s prestigious Prix du Jockey Club. Law Society, victorious in 1984, later wore the Irish Derby crown. St Jovite dazzled in 1991 before dominating Europe’s top middle-distance races, including the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Others, like Oratorio, used their Anglesey win to springboard into elite company, claiming Group 1 glory in the Eclipse Stakes and Irish Champion Stakes.

Even in recent times, the legacy continues. In 2024, Babouche, a striking filly trained by Ger Lyons, stormed home in the Anglesey, prompting whispers of Group 1 potential. Her next stop? The Phoenix Stakes, and possibly the history books.

Mohammed Ahmed, General Manager of Jebel Ali Racecourse, affirmed that participation in the Irish Derby Festival comes in implementation of the directives of Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum to enhance the presence of Emirati horse racing internationally and to consolidate relations with prominent global racecourses.

“The relationship between Jebel Ali and The Curragh is one built on mutual respect and a shared vision for excellence. To sponsor the Anglesey Stakes is a privilege—this is a race steeped in tradition, but also one that looks firmly to the future.”

He pointed out that the longstanding relationship with The Curragh Racecourse represents a successful model for international partnerships, noting that Jebel Ali Racecourse has enhanced its presence in recent years through notable participation in prestigious events such as the Royal Ascot Festival and close cooperation with Britain’s Newbury Racecourse.

Ahmed also thanked Jebel Ali Racecourse board members for their unwavering support and guidance.
