Saeed Mubarak Al Ahbabi: Growing culture by camel racing

Camel racing in the United Arab Emirates is as vibrant in competition as it is in culture, and Saeed Mubarak Al Ahbabi is considered one of its outstanding custodians. With a broad array of talents under his belt, his interests stretch from owning and training camels to being a craftsman and cultural custodian intent on the preservation of the heritage that accompanies this sport. He often says that his interest is not just racing but rather respecting a tradition cultivated over time. They are running for a heritage-laying opportunity through his descent from his forebears.

 To Al Ahbabi, camel racing is much more than speed and entertainment. "Camel racing is part of our identity," he says. "It portrays our relationship with these noble animals and enshrines the traditions of our fathers. Every race is a tribute to them." His approach to the sport is very practical and all-encompassing: breeding, training, conditioning, and preparing these animals physically and mentally for high-grade competitions. His main concerns are to keep the sport clean and uphold its cultural significance.

 Since camel breeding and racing are considered noble professions in the UAE, Al Ahbabi has striven to preserve their age-old values. His efforts were most notable during historic Round 11 (Al-Tawri) on April 16, 2022, when a camel under his charge put forth a remarkable performance. On that occasion, Al Ahbabi said, "It was more than just a win—it was a celebration of effort, respect, and the timeless legacy of our culture."

 On 28 October, during Round 22, another significant event occurred when one of his stalwart camels captured the prestigious Federation Badge through a remarkable display of power and majesty. "In camel racing, it is not just about speed. It is about truly understanding the animal and appreciating the ancient heritage that goes with the sport," remarked the winner.

 Al Ahbabi's unwavering passion for camel racing connects him to Emirati identity in broader terms. The respect he feels for the beasts and every tradition associated with the sport makes him stand apart, not just as an entertainer, but as a custodian of their cultural heritage. In my understanding, he does not regard his victories as merely personal achievements—a true champion—because his late grandfather also practiced racing.
