An A-League football match among competitors Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory was abandoned after fans invaded the field and attacked City goalkeeper Tom Glover.

Videos on social media showed a fan throwing a metal bucket with a white substance at Glover.

He was rushed off the field dazed and bleeding.

Fans from the Melbourne Victory stand rushed into the pitch simply after the 20-minute mark at AAMI Stadium.

City was leading 1-0 when the match was called off.

Football Australia said that following shocking scenes at the A-League men’s game between Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City, where fans from the Melbourne Victory FC entered the field, Football Australia officials have called off the game to protect the integrity of the match.

Fans from both the clubs were throwing flares on the field however the scenario escalated when a flare hit a cameraman.

Glover later picked up another flare off the ground and threw it back into the stands.

This somehow aggravated fans and then they rushed into the pitch. Glover was struck with a steel bucket in the head.

Glover was bleeding from the head wound and was rushed out of the field along with both teams’ players.

Veteran Australia football journalist Ray Gatt said on Twitter, "As a football writer I covered Australian soccer for over 40 years and have seen many highs and crippling lows.

This is the lowest of the lows. So very sad.
