Emilio Ballack, 18, son of German football star Michael Ballack, former Chelsea and Bayern Munich player, died in a quadbike accident on Thursday morning, according to media.

Emilio was the second of three children between Ballack and his former partner Simone Lambe.

Emilio was involved in an accident involving the quadbike on private property as it turned over and fell on top of him. Emergency responders were unable to rescue the 18-year-old.

The accident occurred in Tróia, south of Lisbon, near the family's holiday home, which Ballack bought several years ago.

The young man was killed 2 in the morning.

English club Chelsea FC said on Twitter, “Everybody associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18.

“All our thoughts are with his father Michael and his family at this sad time.”

It is noteworthy that Michael Ballack, who retired from football in 2012, won the English Premier League title with Chelsea, and also won the local league title 3 times with Bayern Munich.

Ballack, now 44, is considered as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation.
