Egyptian footballer and Liverpool striker Mohamed Saleh has tested positive for the coronavirus on Friday.

The announcement was made by the Egyptian soccer association on Twitter ahead of Saturday’s game against Togo in Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

Medical swabs on the national team "showed that our international player, Mohamed Salah, Liverpool star, was infected with the coronavirus," the Egyptian Football Association said in a tweet, adding he was "not suffering from any symptoms."

The tweet said other members of the Egyptian national team tested negative.

Salah was observing medical protocols agreed in consultations between doctors in Egypt and Liverpool, a coronavirus hotspot, and self isolating in a Cairo hotel room.

The two-time African Footballer of the Year will undergo further tests in coming hours, the federation said.

Salah’s positive test is another blow for Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, who is already facing a defensive crisis with the loss of centre backs Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, potentially for the remainder of the season.
