Sportswomen competing in the Arab Women Sports Tournament (AWST 2020) continued to deliver high-level, edge-of-the-seat performances on Tuesday. Emirati athletes sustained supremacy across categories of basketball and volleyball and finished their day with a gold medal in archery.

On the final day of the archery competitions, the top spots on the Team Olympic round finals were dominated by GCC clubs. The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club archery team consisting of Maha Al Hosani, Amna Al Awadi and Hassa Al Awadi, clinched the gold medal; the Al Bahrain Club bagged the silver; while KSA’s Riyadh Club claimed the bronze.

In the Individuals Olympic round, Bahrain clinched the gold as well as bronze medals, by Mariam Issa Najm and Sara Marzouq, respectively. The silver was claimed by Iraqi archer Rand Al Mashanadi.

Sharjah Women’s Sports Club finished their first basketball match against KSA’s Elite Athletes Club on Tuesday with a 23-point lead. The first three quarters of the game were dominated by Sharjah’s basketballers.

The Saudi team made a comeback in the fourth, which was some kind of redemption but wasn’t enough. The scoreboard was on the UAE’s side with a final tally of 85–62.

Tunisia’s Al Amal Sportif and Al Watan Al Qabali built on the great first impression they’ve made in the match against Algeria’s Le Groupement Sportif des Pétroliers.

Playing the last basketball game on Tuesday, both teams had their eyes on the prize. A game that could have been anyone’s ended with Tunisia winning by a 3-point difference. The final score was 67–64.

The Tunisian team has been primed for a contest with the UAE’s Sharjah Women’s Sports Club.

UAE’s Al Wasl Club continued their victory march, winning a hard-fought 1:14 hour match they played against Bahrain’s Al Ahli Club. The final scores displayed at the SWS volleyball stadium reflected what a nailbiting 3-setter it was; final tallies were 76–60.

Egypt’s Sporting Sports Club registered a victory in the volleyball finals they played yesterday, recovering from losing the first set to their Tunisian opponents from Club Sportif Sfaxien.

Egypt made a grand comeback, winning the next three sets in an intense 1:50 hour game of volleyball. The excellent skills and sporting spirit of the Egyptian team culminated in an impressive 92–83 win for them.

The volleyball match between Jordan’s De La Salle Club and Syrian Taldara Club kept the viewers at the edge of their seats.

The Syrian team upped bucked up after a weak start in their debut game and almost snatched the first set from the Jordanian club. The first set ended 25-21.

However, the Syrian team persevered and ended the second set to their advantage with a 25-19 score.

The third set was thriller to the last minute with Jordan’s De La Salle Club taking the game into two extra sets before finally edging the Syrian team out, 25-23.

Taldara Club sportswomen pushed themselves to the limit to regain control of the game and secured the next set with a 25-22 at the whistle. However, De La Salle Club went into a full-throttle and ended the final set to their advantage crushing the Syrian team with a 15-1 set, winning the championship-level game.

With a 3-2 set win, the Jordanian team will face off with Bahrain’s Al Ahli Club on Friday.

Meanwhile, the inaugural table tennis competitions held on Tuesday pitted five clubs against each other in two rounds of matches held at SWS.

Algeria’s Association des Sports Féminins secured their first win after their player Kasasi Kateba won a 3-set match against Kuwait’s Al Fatat Sports Club athlete Mariam Salman. Meanwhile, Algerian player Nasiri Mleesa won 3 – 1 against Kuwaiti Monwa Al Shemari.

Kuwaiti Sheikha Adnan won their club’s only match, finishing her game against Binyamena Khawla, 3–0. However, Kasasi Kateba cemented her club’s achievements by winning her next match 3-0 against  Monwa Al Shemari. The final game result was 3–1 for Algeria’s Association des Sports Féminins.

The Algerian team continued their day’s achievements by winning 3-0 against KSA’s Riyadh Sports Club.

Meanwhile, Sharjah Women’s Sports Club lost 1–3 against Bahrain’s A’Ali Club. However, in the second round, they secured their first win against KSA’s Green Jeddah Club, with a final score of 3-0. The tournament concludes on Feb.12.
