SHARJAH: The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, an affiliate of the Sharjah Women’s Sports (SWS), announced the addition of futsal to the list of sports it promotes.

The announcement came during a special reception ceremony that was held recently at the club’s headquarters in preparation for the new season, and the attendance of 150 sportswomen who won 200 medals in 2018-2019 season.

The Sharjah Women’s Sports Club’s addition of women’s futsal aligns with the directives of Her Highness, Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah and Chairperson of the SWS, to encourage women’s sports in Sharjah and the UAE and contribute to promoting futsal amongst Sharjah’s sports clubs.

The club has called for those who are interested in playing the game to register under three age group: 10-12, 13-18, and 19-years old and above. The selection of athletes will be made through club officials visits to schools, in addition to registration at the club premises. Participants will undergo physical fitness and skill tests supervised by the club’s coaches. The selection trials will be held at sports facilities of the club and at Al Manar Model Independent School.

Nada Al Naqbi, Director General of SWS, remarked that the entity was keen on enhancing the women’s sports sector in Sharjah and the UAE through its initiatives and strategies and one of the ways was by increasing the number of sports for women. She emphasised that the move would contribute to providing sportswomen with the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities, as well as participate in competitions and represent the UAE at regional and international tournaments and sporting events.

“Adding futsal games in our roster of sports activities for our 2020 season reflects on the growing success and aspirations female athletes have achieved in the developing women sports industry in Sharjah. The debut of these games fall in line with our mission and vision, and that of SWS, to increase and grow female participations across all fields of sports, and provide professional athletes a platform to practice, perform and partake in major tournaments both locally and globally.

“More importantly, such achievements also reflect on the wise directives of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher to empower women in sports and enable them to further elevate their capabilities and play a significant role in society’s future and development.” she added.

The SWS develops a strategic plan aimed at setting effective mechanisms to encourage female athletes to play ten different sports at the Sharjah Women’s Sports Club, offering them the opportunity to develop their talents and capabilities in individual and team sports. The club strives to provide an inspiring environment that contributes to supporting women’s sports and building a generation of female coaches and professional players who can compete and participate in local, regional and international championships.
