The George Washington Bridge in New York, one of the most heavily used spans in the world, was closed on Thursday night due to a bomb threat, authorities said.
The measure "will help to ensure our world-class tourism destination remains a safe place for people to visit and transverse,” the statement said. But opponents say that the ban violates rights protected by the First Amendment.
At least eight people went into the water. Two were rescued, but the other six — part of a construction crew that had been filling potholes on the bridge — were missing and presumed dead. A search for their bodies was underway on Wednesday.
