Travellers across much of the eastern US were bracing for one of the most treacherous Christmas weekends in decades, with forecasters warning of a "bomb cyclone” that will pack heavy snow and wind while sending temperatures plummeting 50˚C in a matter of hours.
Millions of Americans endured bone-chilling temperatures, blizzard conditions, power outages and canceled holiday gatherings on Friday from a winter storm that forecasters said was nearly unprecedented in its scope, exposing about 60% of the US population to some sort of winter weather advisory or warning.
"Much of the eastern United States will remain in a deep freeze through Monday before a moderating trend sets in on Tuesday," the National Weather Service said on Monday. Over 1,000 US flights had already been cancelled just hours into Monday..."
"We have not seen so much hail during the winter season in 15 years," Muhammad Karam, a former director of Kuwait's meteorological department, said.
