A powerful 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck the northern Philippine island of Luzon on Wednesday killing at least five people, damaging buildings and sending strong tremors through the capital, Manila.
It also revised the depth from an initial 10 kilometers (six miles) to 24 km. The quake hit off Taiwan's east coast — near the island's scenic tourist city Hualien — but was felt over much of the island.
In a statement on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation expressed its sympathy to the Japanese government, people, and families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
