The West Australian state government said the attack occurred near Cull Island, which lies about 6 kilometres (3.73 miles) off the mainland's Esperance coast. Australia is known for a large number of unprovoked shark encounters with humans.

Several board-riders came to the assistance of the Queensland man and fought the shark off before pulling him to shore at Salt Beach, near Kingscliff, some 800 km (500 miles) north of Sydney.
The 55-year-old man was pulled from the water with serious injuries and treated by police before paramedics arrived, but later succumbed to his injuries.
