Australia on Monday appointed ex-England bowling coach Troy Cooley for their upcoming Ashes series as they bid to win the urn on away soil for the first time in 18 years.
The 56-year-old, who played seven Tests and 11 ODIs for New Zealand, will be working under Mickey Arthur, who was appointed team director in March.
The Pakistan cricket team is currently in England, acclimatising themselves ahead of their much-anticipated series which includes three Tests and as many T20Is starting August.
"There have been so many great ones over the years and I am confident that the future will be bright again," added Waqar, who formed a celebrated partnership with left-arm quick Wasim Akram and is now Pakistan's bowling coach.
