Scientists in Italy have found traces of the new coronavirus in wastewater collected from Milan and Turin in December 2019 — suggesting COVID-19 was already circulating in northern Italy before China reported the first cases.
The country of 30 million people recorded its first COVID-19 infection on March 2. Health authorities said in April the virus could eventually infect between 10,000 and 200,000 people in Saudi Arabia. The kingdom topped 50,000 cases on May 16.
The UAE Ministry of Health conducted 135,883 COVID-19 tests in the past 24 hours. The ministry has expressed its plans to expand the scope of the tests to detect coronavirus cases in the UAE.
Dr Sultan said a few weeks ago, 400-500 cases were being reported across Pakistan on a daily basis. The tally, he said, had shot up to 700-750 cases of the infection per day.
Monguillot was attacked in the southwestern town of Bayonne on Sunday after he asked three passengers to wear masks — in line with coronavirus rules across France — and tried to check another man's ticket.
Experts said the findings may change how governments plan for the next phase of the pandemic, including how they fund and organise vaccine research and development.
The new achievement comes after the successful practical use of police dogs all over the UAE airports as an additional defence line in detecting presumed COVID-19 cases.
The vaccine, called AZD1222, has been described by the World Health Organisation's chief scientist as the leading candidate in a global race to halt a pandemic that has claimed more than 600,000 lives.
