East Timor on Friday marked 20 years since a UN-backed vote ended a bloody, decades-long occupation by Indonesian forces and paved the way for it to become an independent nation.
USGS said the quake struck at a depth of 51.4 kilometres (32 miles) off the eastern tip of Timor Island, which is split between East Timor and Indonesia.
At least 49 families were hit on the island in the east of Indonesia's sprawling archipelago, Raditya Jati, a spokesman for disaster management agency BNPB, said in a statement.
