It is a sad day for all lovers of art and films, that a gifted and consummate artist like Nane Patekar has passed away at the age of 75 years. He was a great performer, a skilled thespian and a fine human being. He will be remembered for his many strong roles, particularly in movies like Ab Tak Chhappan and Parinda. He will also be cherished for his comedy roles in movies like Welcome.
Despite his success and fame, Nana continued to be a simple person, engaged in philanthropy and rural welfare schemes. His heart was always with the farming community and the marginal sections of Indian society. He was a Bollywood star, but he avoided all the trappings of a typical star. He avoided controversies.
Actors tend to improve their performances as they age. As they mature and get experienced, they know exactly what a script or scene warrants. They require little direction or instructions from the director. Like Mr. Amitabh Bachchan. His performance in Uunchai was scintillating. Actor Rishi Kapoor had once said that Mr Bachchan was like a fine wine, getting better with age.
Shri Nana Patekar was also in the same league. He was getting better with age. Lamentably he has gone too early. 75 years, is no age to go, with modern medicine. With improved medical facilities 75 years, is reasonably youngish nowadays.
