Shocking decision

The only superpower country in the world with a solid economy, the United States of America, keeps imposing heavy tariffs on other countries. This time, its neighbouring country, Canada, has been slapped with 50 per cent tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products, which left the country in shock (“US imposes 50% tariffs on $20 billion worth of Canadian products,” Aug.22, Gulf Today website).

According to the report, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said in a statement, “The retaliation escalates the trade conflict and calls into question the future of a North American trade pact between the United States, Canada and Mexico that is crucial to industry in all three countries.”

The world is going through its toughest time, dealing with the outcome of ongoing wars in different parts of the world. The world economy has suffered a lot, and countries are doing their best to control inflation in all commodities and oil and gas prices.

At a time when the world is struggling, the decision made by the only superpower in the world to impose hefty tariffs on other countries’ products is making the economic situation worse for others.

The US administration should review its policy of imposing tariffs on other countries and let businesses flourish, which will be beneficial not only for the United States of America but for others as well.
